I’m really excited for this one.

We shot the video last summer at a beach near Amsterdam.

    Summertime vibes!!

It may not be May yet but “Summertime has arrived you can feel it in the air…” declares D.O. on the new single “Good For The Summer” from LDM, NTRIKIT, iLLvibe and D.O. Gibson.

The track is an international collaboration amongst artists from the Netherlands, US and Canada. The four connected at New Skool Rules – Europe’s largest Hip-Hop conference – in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 2015.

They would reconnect in the summer of 2016 to shoot the video for the song at Bloemendaal – a pristine beach located thirty minutes from Amsterdam.

The track began as a single for Lloyd De Meza aka LDM – a longtime fixture in the Netherland music scene. US producer NTRIKIT approached LDM to make a remix of the song. They knew they had something special on their hands, but felt that it was missing one thing – a guest rapper. Instead of getting one, they got two – they reached out to friends D.O. Gibson and iLLvibe to contribute vocals.

“As soon as I heard it, I knew it was a smash. I wrote and recorded my lyrics in the span of a couple of hours,” says iLLvibe.

2017 will see the four reconnect at New Skool Rules in May with a performance at the conference that they originally connected at.

“You attend conferences to build relationships with artists and people in the industry, but most people don’t follow up so nothing happens. We wanted to show people the power of collaboration,” says producer NTRIKIT.

While a collaborative release, each of the four artists has something major planned for 2017 with a steady stream of releases.

“We are supportive of each other,” says LDM “We all want each other to win.”

The proof is in his lyrics, “Flex, Relax, No negativity on deck,” sings LDM.

“Good For The Summer” is available on all digital outlets via Heavy Aux / Fontana.

D.O. Gibson – Follow Me featuring and produced by The Rezza Brothers
    Directed by Illvibe

In my latest video I wanted to take it back…

Back to the days before I quit my job and became a full time MC.

See before I was a rapper, I spent my time in the classroom. I wasn’t a full fledged teacher – the official position was “teacher/tutor”. I taught classes after school. The kids called me “Mr. Gibson”. On the weekends I taught learn to read classes for kindergarten students.

Nowadays I spend a lot of time in schools with my Stay Driven school program. I’ve had the chance to do over one thousand shows at schools across Canada telling my story of defying the odds to achieve my dreams and I speak about anti-bullying.

This video was a chance for me to put it all together.

In “Follow Me” I play a substitute teacher that has to watch over an unruly class.

The track is one of my favourites from my album “Duane Gibson” that I released in May. It’s features the Rezza Brothers who also produce the track. Rezza Brothers and I also go way back… I’ve known these guys since when I was in University, but surprisingly this is our first track together. One thing I’ve learned about the music biz is that its all about timing, and as soon as they played me the beat – it was over. I knew I had to do something with this one.

Adrian Rezza – the singer on the track – appears in the video as a teacher. It’s not a stretch for him either. He’s been an elementary school teacher for close to fifteen years. In the meantime, he and his brother Lucas – the producer of the track – have gone on to release a catalogue of music, sign a publishing deal with Universal, and work with the likes of Divine Brown, Bonecrusher, and Music Soulchild.

For me the track is semi-autobiographical. I rap about how I found it tough fitting in when I was growing up. I would try new things but it just didn’t seem to work. I loved playing sports, but I was never a top athlete. I liked music, but wasn’t a singer. It took me a while to find my passion, but when I did – it was on! From that first day of writing and performing my raps I was hooked. It also became my outlet for blowing off steam and as I got better at it, my confidence rose.

The message in the song is that it’s not about blending it and being a follower, its about standing out and being a leader.

As the my man Adrian says… “Used to look up to the stars… now they following us!”

Shoutout to Illvibe for directing. I’ve lost track at how many videos we’ve done together. I think this is the fifth or sixth. I love that he gets better each time.

A special thank you to the staff and students at St. Isaac Jogues and the Toronto Catholic School Board. As you can see from the video, these kids were naturals. They were great. The video wouldn’t be possible without them.

I can’t wait for some of my old students to see it and say “Mr Gibson you haven’t changed at all…” haha!
